Magazines

Fellow ex-publishing folks, help me fill in the blanks:

M = Time
A = Vanity Fair
G = Rolling Stone
A = ?
Z = Harper's Bazaar
I = ?
N = ?
ES = Esquire

This mug tells the story of an industry's final rally cry.
It's from the 2010 "Power of Print" campaign, when five major publishing houses spent $90 million trying to convince advertisers and consumers that magazines were worth a damn.

Ouch. It still stings because I loved working in magazine publishing: the eccentric editors, the celebrities in the hallways, the demanding advertisers, the deadlines, the cafeterias and the swag. Going to the office was exciting. Sadly, it's all very different now.

People way smarter than me have written about the reasons for the magazine industry's decline: high printing and distribution costs, cheap digital media advertising, changing consumer behaviors, faster news cycles, etc.

I've held onto this chipped, coffee-stained mug because the publishing industry taught me everything: marketing, design, writing, event planning, work ethic. Not to mention the long hours, small paychecks, and incredibly passionate people who believed in the power of storytelling.

Anyone still read magazines? Which ones?
